Actions You Can Take
to Defend Our Democracy
-
Attend an organized protest (Find out about them via emails from various organizations, from our weekly newsletter, or from our Events Calendar or our website’s Events page)
Join others in a bridge brigade or street corner visibility event (See www.nhbbd.org website or our Slack tool if you are a member).
Hold a sign or display a banner at one of these events bearing a message that is “yours.”
SNHI members can check the Ride Share channel on our Slack tool to team up with others for rides.
-
Attend NH legislative sessions to give testimony or support a position by your attendance (Details available from Kent Street Coalition or SNHI newsletters).
Show support and respect for immigrants by attending Vigils, participating in training, helping to disseminate information or attending pro-immigrant and pro-due process demonstrations.
Volunteer to support a candidate important to you by doing door knocking, phone banking, or other needed actions.
Write Letters to the Editor (LTEs) of your local or regional news publications about current issues, particularly ones pending before federal, state or local government bodies.
They don’t have to be fancy, but they should be well thought out and respectful. It may take a few minutes on the internet to find instructions on how and where to submit to each newspaper, but it’s not difficult. A few to get you started:
Union Leader Upload LTE (250 words or less) to the Online Forum or email to: opinion@theunionleadercom
InDepth NH Email letters and comments via http://indepthnh.org/contact
Seacoast Area Portsmouth Herald opinion@seacoastonline.com Exeter Newsletter newsletter@seacoastonline.com Hampton Union hamptonunion@seacoastonline.com All 300 words or less

Keep abreast of issues in the NH legislature from SNHI’s weekly newsletter or for more detail from Kent Street Coalition’s newsletter. SNHI members will also find updated information posted in the Calls-To-Action and Topic NH Legislation channels of the SNHI Slack tool.
Voice your position about local, state and federal issues by calling, emailing or writing your respective representatives or appropriate committee members.
SNHI quite often posts on Slack asking our members to call or write to their reps. Here are some phone numbers you’ll need:
Sen. Jeanne Shaheen: Call (202) 224-2841 / 603-647-7500
Sen. Maggie Hassan: Call (202) 224-3324 / (603) 622-2204
Rep. Chris Pappas (NH-01): Call (202) 225-5456 / (603) 285-4300
Rep. Maggie Goodlander (NH-02): Call (202) 225-5206 / (603) 226-1002
See also email and other contact information on their respective websites.
For information about how to contact NH legislators, go to: http://gencourt.state.nh.us
Hint: It is a good practice to start a document on your computer that stores all the contact information you gather. It makes it a lot easier the next time.
Consider using the 5 Calls app (Android or Apple) for calls to your congressional delegation on issues that matter to you.
Register your position about bills before the NH legislature or give remote testimony using NH House and Senate Remote Testimony online tools.
Be informed about issues and candidates promoted by the “Free Staters” who seek to change the laws in NH to be less democratic and who support candidates who are aligned with their goals. Find helpful information at www.granitestatematters.org.
Be informed about candidates for federal, state and local office. See SNHI’s weekly newsletters for “listening events” with candidates.
Become informed about and participate in economic boycotts to bring about social change.
Help to make signs for others to bring to demonstrations or protests.
Provide rides to those participating in public testimony or other events.
In everyday conversations with members of your community, say “I disagree” when appropriate.
Individually or as part of an organized effort, write postcards to influence voters on particular issues or give financial support to those efforts.
Provide financial support to organizations that are working to protect our democracy.
Ask a question of your representatives or members of organizations who are helping a cause that is important to you.
